Getting Started

What is Crestox?

Crestox is a curated art investment platform that enables people to invest in artworks through fractional ownership. Rather than purchasing an entire artwork outright — which has historically required significant capital and specialist access — collectors on Crestox can purchase fractals: fractional units representing a participation interest in a curated artwork portfolio.

Crestox sits at the intersection of art, technology, finance, and community. It is not a social media platform for artists, nor a conventional auction house, nor an open marketplace. It is a regulated, curated environment where every artwork, every artist, and every listing is reviewed and approved before it becomes publicly visible.

Platform Mission

Crestox exists to do three things:

Every feature, policy, and design decision on this platform is made in service of those three goals.

The Concept of Fractional Ownership

Fractional ownership means that a single artwork can be divided into a defined number of units — fractals — each representing a proportional participation interest in that artwork's value within a curated portfolio.

Important distinctions:

Marketplace Overview

The Crestox marketplace operates on two levels:

Primary Market Fractals are sold directly from a new or newly approved listing. The artwork owner, artist, or curator sets the initial terms. Collectors purchase fractals at the listed price.

Secondary Market Collectors who hold fractals may list them for resale. Other collectors can purchase those fractals through the secondary marketplace. Prices in the secondary market are set by the seller and are matched automatically to the buyer selecting the lowest available listing price.

Both markets may be active simultaneously for the same artwork.

How Crestox Works

Step 1 — Artwork Submission

An artist, curator, or owner submits an artwork for consideration. The submission must include:

Submissions are made through the platform under My Account → Submit Artwork.

Step 2 — Artwork Review

Every submission is reviewed by the Crestox team before it is approved for listing. The review process covers:

Submissions that do not meet the required standard are rejected with written reasons. Resubmission is permitted once the identified issues are resolved. Review is typically completed within 5 business days.

Step 3 — Artwork Grading

Approved artworks are assigned an internal Crestox grade. This grade reflects the platform's assessment of the artwork's quality, provenance strength, and investment profile. Grading is conducted by the Crestox administration team using an internal methodology.

The grade is displayed on the artwork's listing page. It is one of several data points available to collectors when making investment decisions. It does not constitute investment advice and does not guarantee any particular financial outcome.

Step 4 — Fractal Creation

Once an artwork is approved and graded, it is fractionalized into a predefined number of fractals. The total number of fractals and the initial price per fractal are determined at this stage. These details are disclosed on the artwork's listing page before any fractals are made available for purchase.

Step 5 — Buying Fractals

Collectors may purchase fractals through the primary market at the listed price, or through the secondary market where previously issued fractals are being resold by other collectors.

Purchases are matched automatically from the lowest available listing price. For the full buying process, see Buying Fractals.

Step 6 — Selling Fractals

Collectors may list their fractals for resale through the secondary marketplace at any time, subject to any applicable holding period disclosed at the time of purchase. For the full resale process, see Selling Fractals.

Account Types

Crestox supports five account types. Each has distinct capabilities and obligations on the platform.

Account Type Who It Is For Primary Function
Collector Individuals investing in fractals Browse, purchase, hold, and resell fractals
Artist Creators of original artworks Submit and manage artwork listings; earn from sales and royalties
Curator Authorised representatives of artists Manage artwork listings on behalf of artists, with their written consent
Owner Legal owners of artworks who are not the original creators List eligible artworks from their collections
Administrator Crestox team Govern the marketplace; verify users; review and approve content

All accounts require identity verification (KYC) before accessing core platform functions. See Identity Verification for details.

For Collectors

Investing in Art

How Fractals Work

A fractal is a digital unit representing your proportional participation interest in the value of an approved artwork within the Crestox portfolio. When you purchase fractals, you are purchasing a financial interest — not the artwork itself, not a physical asset, and not any copyright or creative rights in the work.

Your ownership is recorded on the Crestox platform and confirmed by a digital ownership certificate issued in your name.

Minimum Investment

The minimum investment on Crestox is the price of a single fractal in any given artwork listing. Fractal prices vary by listing and are determined at the time of fractionalization. There is no platform-wide minimum investment amount beyond the price of one fractal.

Ownership Rights

As a fractal holder, you are entitled to:

You are not entitled to:

Expected Holding Behaviour

Crestox is designed for long-term participation, not short-term speculation. Fractal values are influenced by the perceived and market-assessed value of the underlying artwork, secondary market supply and demand, and broader trends in the art investment market. There is no guaranteed minimum holding period unless one is specified in a particular listing's terms.

Collectors should consider their investment horizon carefully before purchasing. Art investment is illiquid relative to listed securities. There is no guarantee that you will be able to sell your fractals at any particular time or price.

Buying Fractals

Order Matching Process

When you initiate a fractal purchase, the platform automatically sources fractals from the lowest available listing price across both the primary and secondary markets. You will see the price per fractal and the total cost before confirming your purchase. Confirmation is final.

Lowest-Price Sourcing Mechanism

Crestox operates a price-priority matching system. When multiple listings exist for fractals in the same artwork, your purchase is filled from the cheapest available listing first. If the lowest listing does not cover the full quantity you wish to purchase, the remaining quantity is filled from the next lowest listing, and so on, until your order is complete or no further listings are available.

The final blended price (if your order spans multiple listings) is disclosed before you confirm.

Tax Implications

Crestox does not provide tax advice. The tax treatment of fractal investments may vary depending on your jurisdiction, the nature of the transaction, and your individual circumstances. Potential tax considerations include but are not limited to capital gains tax, income tax on any distributions received, and goods and services tax (GST) or equivalent consumption tax on platform fees.

You are responsible for understanding and meeting your own tax obligations. We strongly recommend that you obtain independent tax advice before investing. GST invoices for applicable transactions are available under My Account → Transaction History → Invoices.

Selling Fractals

Resale Process

To list fractals for resale:

  1. Navigate to My Portfolio and select the artwork.
  2. Choose the number of fractals you wish to sell and set your asking price per fractal.
  3. Review and confirm the listing.

Your listing is published to the secondary marketplace immediately upon confirmation. It remains active until it is either purchased in full, you cancel it, or it expires in accordance with the listing duration rules set out below.

Platform Fees

Crestox charges a transaction fee on secondary market sales. The applicable fee rate is displayed at the time you create a listing and is deducted from your proceeds upon settlement. The full fee schedule is available at Fee Schedule.

Artist Royalties

Where an artwork listing specifies that the artist is entitled to a royalty on secondary market transactions, that royalty is deducted automatically from the sale proceeds at the time of settlement and remitted to the artist. The royalty rate, if any, is disclosed on the artwork's listing page. Royalties are non-negotiable and are applied to all qualifying secondary market transactions without exception.

Listing Duration

Secondary market listings remain active for a maximum of 90 days from the date of creation. If your listing has not been fully purchased within 90 days, it will expire automatically and the fractals will be returned to your portfolio. You may relist at any time.

You may cancel an active listing at any time before it is purchased, under My Portfolio → [Artwork] → Manage Listings.

Ownership Certificates

What Certificates Represent

A Crestox ownership certificate is a digital document issued in your name confirming:

Certificates are records of your financial participation interest. They are not title documents to the physical artwork, and they do not confer copyright or any other intellectual property interest.

Verification Process

Certificates are generated automatically upon settlement of a confirmed fractal purchase. They are available under My Portfolio → [Artwork] → Certificate within 48 hours of purchase confirmation.

Each certificate carries a unique reference number that can be used to verify its authenticity with Crestox. To verify a certificate, contact verification@crestox.com with the certificate reference number.

For Artists

Artist Verification

Profile Approval Process

Artist profiles on Crestox are not publicly visible until they have been reviewed and approved by the Crestox administration team. This is a structural feature of the platform, not an optional step.

To submit your profile for approval:

  1. Complete all required fields under My Account → My Profile, including your biography, portfolio links, and identification documents.
  2. Submit for review.

Required documentation:

Profile review is completed within 3 business days. You will be notified by email of approval or rejection. Rejection notifications include the specific reason and instructions for resubmission.

Uploading Artworks

Submission Requirements

Requirement Detail
Images Minimum 3 images; minimum resolution 2000px on the longest edge; formats: JPG, PNG, TIFF
Title Full, accurate title of the work
Medium Materials and technique used
Dimensions Height × Width × Depth (where applicable), in centimetres
Year Year of creation (or date range if created over multiple years)
Edition Information If the work is an edition, state edition number and total edition size
Provenance Documentation of ownership history where available
Artist Statement Optional but strongly recommended

Submissions that do not meet these requirements will be returned for completion before review begins.

Metadata Requirements

Accurate metadata is essential to the integrity of every listing on the platform. By submitting an artwork, you confirm that all metadata provided is accurate and complete to the best of your knowledge. Submitting false or misleading metadata is a breach of the Crestox Terms of Service and may result in account suspension.

Artwork Evaluation

Review Process

Every artwork submission is reviewed by the Crestox team for authenticity, metadata completeness, provenance quality, and compliance with platform standards. The review is conducted within 5 business days of a complete submission.

Pricing Review

The initial fractal price is determined through Crestox's internal pricing review, taking into account the artwork's assessed value, comparable market data, and the assigned grade. Artists may provide supporting documentation — such as recent appraisals or auction records — to inform this assessment.

Crestox retains the right to make the final pricing determination. Artists who disagree with the proposed pricing may request a review before approving the listing, by submitting a ticket under Artists → Pricing Review.

Grading Methodology

Crestox assigns each approved artwork an internal grade based on a proprietary assessment framework. The grade reflects the platform's evaluation of the artwork's quality, the strength of its provenance documentation, the artist's profile and exhibition history, and relevant market comparables.

Grades are not permanent. Crestox may update a grade in response to new market information, additional documentation provided by the artist, or changes in market conditions. Grade changes will be communicated to the relevant artist.

Grades are informational tools for collectors and do not constitute investment advice.

Earnings

Primary Sales

When fractals in your artwork are purchased on the primary market, your earnings are calculated as the total proceeds from those sales, less the Crestox platform fee and any applicable taxes. The applicable fee rate is disclosed on your listing terms. Earnings from primary sales are credited to your Crestox wallet upon settlement.

Secondary Royalties

Where your listing specifies a royalty entitlement on secondary market transactions, you will receive the stated royalty percentage from every qualifying secondary sale of fractals in your artwork, automatically and without the need to submit a claim. Royalty payments are processed monthly. Royalty statements are available under My Account → Earnings → Royalties.

Royalty entitlements, rates, and payment terms are fixed at the time of listing and cannot be amended retroactively.

For Curators

Curator Permissions

Required Authorisation

A curator is an individual or organisation authorised by an artist to manage that artist's artwork listings on the Crestox platform. Curators may not act on behalf of an artist without completing the Crestox authorisation process.

To establish curator authorisation:

Both the artist and the curator must complete the authorisation process through My Account → Curator Permissions. The artist must confirm, through the platform, that the curator has their permission to manage listings on their behalf.

Crestox requires written evidence of authorisation as part of the verification process. Verbal or informal arrangements are not sufficient.

A curator who submits an artwork listing, manages pricing, or takes any action on an artist's behalf on the Crestox platform represents and warrants that they have full, current authorisation from the relevant artist to take those actions.

Crestox is not a party to the arrangement between an artist and their curator. Disputes between artists and curators regarding authorisation, revenue, or representation are the responsibility of the parties involved. Crestox may take action — including suspending listings — where an authorisation dispute is brought to its attention.

Curators remain personally responsible for the accuracy of any information they submit on behalf of an artist.

Revenue Sharing

How Curator Earnings Work

Revenue sharing arrangements between curators and artists are agreed between the parties and documented at the time of listing. Crestox facilitates the distribution of earnings in accordance with the revenue sharing terms recorded on the platform.

To review or update a revenue sharing arrangement, navigate to My Account → Earnings → Revenue Share. Changes to revenue sharing terms require the consent of both the curator and the artist and must be confirmed through the platform before they take effect.

For Owners

Artwork Ownership Verification

Required Documents

Owners wishing to list artworks on Crestox must demonstrate legal ownership of the relevant artwork. The following documentation is required:

Crestox applies the following standards when assessing ownership documentation:

Submitting an artwork you do not have the legal right to list is a breach of the Crestox Terms of Service and may constitute fraud under applicable law. Crestox will report confirmed cases of fraudulent listing to relevant authorities.

Marketplace Mechanics

Pricing System

Understanding the four price concepts on Crestox:

Concept Definition
Artwork Value The assessed total value of the artwork, as determined by the Crestox grading and pricing review process. This is the baseline from which the initial fractal price is derived.
Fractal Value The initial price per fractal at the time of listing, calculated by dividing the artwork value by the total number of fractals created.
Market Value The price at which fractals are currently trading in the secondary marketplace. Market value is determined by supply and demand and may differ significantly from the initial fractal value.
Resale Value The price at which a specific collector has listed their fractals for sale. Individual resale listings contribute to the market value but are not the same as it.

None of these values represent a guarantee of what you will receive if you sell your fractals. All investment involves risk. Values may go up or down.

Trust & Compliance

Approval Process

Nothing on Crestox is published without passing through a human review process. This applies to:

Artist Approvals Artist profiles, biographies, exhibition records, achievements, and historical sales are all reviewed before they become publicly visible. An artist's presence on the platform is itself a signal of verified participation — not simply a self-declaration.

Artwork Approvals Every artwork listing is individually reviewed for authenticity, provenance, metadata accuracy, and compliance with platform standards. Listings that do not meet the required standard are rejected.

Achievement Approvals Exhibition records, awards, and other achievements listed on artist profiles are subject to review. Unverifiable claims are removed.

Anti-Fraud Measures

Identity Verification

All users — regardless of account type — are required to complete identity verification (KYC) before accessing core platform functions. KYC is conducted in accordance with applicable anti-money laundering (AML) regulation.

Required documentation:

Corporate accounts require company registration documentation and verification of beneficial owners.

Identity documents are stored securely and handled in accordance with the Crestox Privacy Policy.

Artwork Verification

In addition to the ownership and provenance review described in Artwork Security, Crestox cross-references submissions against available databases of stolen, disputed, and culturally protected artworks. Submissions that trigger a match are placed on hold pending further investigation and are not approved for listing until the matter is resolved.

Audit Processes

All transactions on the Crestox platform generate immutable audit records. These records are retained in accordance with applicable financial regulation and are available to authorised regulatory bodies upon request.

Internal access to audit records is restricted to authorised Crestox personnel. All internal access is logged.

Frequently Asked Questions

Accounts

Do I need to verify my identity to use Crestox? Yes. Identity verification is mandatory for all account types before you can purchase fractals, list artworks, or access the secondary marketplace. This is a regulatory requirement, not a platform preference.

Can I have more than one account type? No. Each Crestox account is associated with a single account type. If your role changes — for example, if you are an artist who also wishes to collect — contact support@crestox.com to discuss your options.

What happens if my verification is rejected? You will receive an email explaining the reason for rejection and the steps required to resubmit. Common reasons include incomplete documentation, low-quality image uploads, or documents that have expired.

Investments

Is there a minimum investment amount? The minimum investment is the price of a single fractal in any given listing. There is no platform-wide minimum beyond that.

Can I lose money on Crestox? Yes. The value of fractals can decrease as well as increase. You may receive back less than you invested. Art investment is not guaranteed and carries financial risk. Do not invest money you cannot afford to lose.

How liquid is a fractal investment? Fractals are traded through the Crestox secondary marketplace, but liquidity is not guaranteed. The ability to sell your fractals depends on there being a willing buyer at a price you find acceptable. There may be periods where no buyers are active for a particular artwork. You should treat fractal investments as relatively illiquid compared to listed securities.

Does Crestox provide investment advice? No. Nothing on this platform — including artwork grades, pricing data, featured placements, or community stories — constitutes investment advice. You should obtain independent financial advice before making investment decisions.

Artwork

What kinds of artworks can be listed on Crestox? Crestox accepts original artworks across mediums including painting, sculpture, photography, and digital art, subject to the approval process. Artworks must meet provenance and authenticity standards. Crestox does not accept reproductions, prints without documented edition limits, or works whose ownership cannot be established to the required standard.

Can an artwork be removed from the platform after listing? Yes. Crestox may delist an artwork in cases of verified fraud, ownership dispute, or breach of platform terms. Where an artwork is delisted and fractals have been sold, Crestox will communicate with affected fractal holders about next steps.

Who physically holds the artwork? The physical artwork remains with the artist, owner, or a designated custodian. Crestox does not take physical custody of any artwork.

Taxes

Does Crestox provide tax advice? No. Crestox does not provide tax advice. Tax treatment of fractal investments varies by jurisdiction and individual circumstances. You are solely responsible for understanding and fulfilling your tax obligations. Consult a qualified tax adviser.

Will I receive documentation for my tax records? GST invoices for applicable platform transactions are available under My Account → Transaction History → Invoices. Transaction histories can be exported from the same section.

Payments

What payment methods are accepted? Crestox accepts payment by credit card, debit card, and bank transfer, subject to availability in your jurisdiction. Payment methods are displayed at checkout.

How long do wallet withdrawals take? Withdrawals to a verified bank account are processed within 3–5 business days.

What happens if my payment fails? If a payment fails, your order will not be confirmed. Your wallet balance and fractal holdings will not be affected. Check your card or bank details and retry. If the issue persists, contact support@crestox.com.

Security

How is my data protected? All data transmitted through the Crestox platform is encrypted using TLS 1.2 or higher. Sensitive stored data is encrypted at rest using AES-256 encryption. For full details, see the Security page.

What should I do if I think my account has been compromised? Change your password immediately, terminate all active sessions under My Account → Security → Active Sessions, and contact security@crestox.com with the subject line "URGENT — Account Compromise".

Does Crestox ever ask for my password? Never. Crestox staff will not ask for your password under any circumstances. If you receive such a request, do not comply and report it immediately to security@crestox.com.
